Write the opening 200 words of a story where a lighthouse keeper slowly realizes the light has been guiding ships AWAY from safety for decades. Use restraint: no explicit horror, only accumulating wrongness.
The logbook never lied, and that was the worst part. Every entry in my father's hand, and his father's before him, matched the pattern I'd only just noticed: a ship sighted on the western approach, the light turned, the ship gone by morning. I'd always read those entries as rescues. Tonight I read them as erasures. I checked the chart again, the one I'd unrolled across the table, its creases worn soft as cloth. The reef ran along the eastern shore—I'd known that since I was a boy. What I hadn't known, what the chart showed me now with terrible patience, was that the safe channel curved east. The light, in all its faithful revolutions, swept west. I climbed the tower and stood behind the great lens, feeling the mechanism hum through the iron floor. Below, a freighter's running lights crept toward the western swell. The beam caught her bow, held her, turned her gently toward the open water where the chart showed nothing but depth and distance. I watched her go, and I did not stop the lamp, because stopping it felt like admitting something I wasn't ready to name. My father's handwriting had always seemed so certain. Now I saw the tremor in the final years, the way the ink thinned near the last entries, as if his hand had known before his mind did.
