What to provide

Bring three things: the text or the task, the reader, and the job the words have to do. "Make this better" gives a model nothing to aim at; "make this refusal polite enough to keep the customer, in under 80 words" does. Say what must not change — facts, dates, names, a legal phrase, your voice. Mention the language and variety if it matters, and whether you want suggestions explained or just applied. If the text is private, remove names, addresses and account details first; a writing task rarely needs them.

Example starting request

Help me with writing. Use the terminal to draft, edit, compress, expand, brainstorm, and preserve a particular voice. Explain your reasoning and identify anything I should verify.

Worked example

Illustrative example, not a generated result or a user transcript.

Original: "I am writing to inform you that your application has not been successful on this occasion. We will keep your details on file." Brief: warmer, shorter, no promises. Illustrative revision: "Thank you for applying. We have chosen another candidate this time, and we will not keep your details unless you ask us to." Two real changes happened: the stiff opening became a thank-you, and a vague promise about keeping details became a precise statement. Ask Mother to list its changes in that style — a change you cannot see is a change you cannot approve.

Work in passes, not in one giant rewrite. First pass: structure — is everything in the order a reader needs it? Second pass: cuts — most drafts improve more from deleting than from adding. Third pass: voice — read it aloud and mark every sentence you would never say. Ask for one pass at a time and keep the version you like before requesting the next; a full regeneration can quietly remove the one sentence you wanted to keep.

Check the answer

A writing assistant will happily improve the style of a wrong fact. Recheck every name, number, date and commitment after any rewrite, because fluent text hides changed details. Be careful with tone in complaints, refusals and apologies: a draft that sounds warm to you can read as dismissive to someone upset. The final judgement is yours, and for anything contractual, medical or legal, style help is not professional advice.
