What to provide

Turn your curiosity into a question with edges: name the topic, the time period, the place if it matters, and what you will do with the answer. "Is remote work more productive?" is too wide to answer honestly; "What did studies between 2020 and 2025 find about call-centre staff working from home?" can actually be investigated. Say whether you need a quick orientation, a comparison of options or material for a decision, and list what you already believe so Mother can challenge it rather than decorate it. Keep personal data out of the question.

Example starting request

Help me with research. Start with first principles, request competing explanations, then ask for what evidence would change the conclusion. Explain your reasoning and identify anything I should verify.

Worked example

Illustrative example, not a generated result or a user transcript.

Brief: "I am choosing between two laptops for programming study. Research task: compare them on battery life under real use, keyboard quality and Linux compatibility. Give me the three criteria that matter most, what evidence would settle each one, and what you could not verify." An illustrative finding shape: "Linux compatibility — both models are reported working, but one needs a newer kernel for Wi-Fi; settle it by checking the exact wireless chip against the distribution's hardware notes." Notice it tells you the deciding check instead of declaring a winner from marketing pages.

Separate three piles as you read: facts with a source you can open, claims repeated everywhere but sourced nowhere, and opinions wearing a fact's clothing. Ask Mother directly, "which of these points would change if your weakest source is wrong?" — the answer shows you where the argument actually stands. Research is finished when you can state the strongest argument against your own conclusion, not when the page feels long.

Check the answer

A research answer is a starting brief, not a verified report. Open the sources that matter, check their dates, and be suspicious of precise numbers with no origin. For anything involving money, health, law or safety, go to the primary source — the regulator, the manufacturer, the actual paper. Mother has no live view of your accounts or local rules, and its training can lag behind prices, versions and regulations that changed this year.
