What to provide
Paste the job advertisement and your CV with your address, phone number and any reference details removed — the letter needs your experience, not your contact block. Mark the three requirements in the ad you genuinely meet, and say so if you meet only part of one. Give the letter a length, usually three short paragraphs, and name the tone the employer uses in the ad itself. For an alternance or first job, say that plainly and name what you are studying; employers can tell when a beginner is dressed up as a senior, and most prefer the honest version.
Example starting request
Write a cover letter for ROLE at COMPANY. Match my experience to the top three requirements in the post — with evidence, not adjectives. Open with the one line that would make them keep reading. Keep it under 250 words.
Worked example
Illustrative example, not a generated result or a user transcript.
Brief: "The ad asks for ticket logging, patient user support and basic Windows troubleshooting, three days a week alongside my course. My real material: six months helping at a school IT desk, I log every fault in a shared spreadsheet, and I passed a first-year networking module. Write three short paragraphs, no adjectives about passion." Illustrative middle paragraph: "At my school IT desk I logged 10 to 15 faults a week, noted what I had already tested, and escalated network faults with the switch and port numbers attached, so the technician never had to start from zero." Every number there must be yours before you use a sentence like it.
A good letter answers one question: can this person do Tuesday morning's actual work? Read the draft and underline every claim, then ask of each one, "could I defend this in the interview room?" Delete anything you cannot. Ask Mother for a second version that is 30 percent shorter; the shorter draft usually exposes which paragraph was padding. Finish by reading it aloud once — sentences you stumble over are sentences a recruiter will skim past.
Check the answer
Never send claims, dates, qualifications or software skills the draft added and you do not have; generated letters invent them fluently. Check the company name, job title and contract type character by character, because a perfect letter for the wrong role is a rejection. Keep one master copy of your real achievements and rebuild each letter from it, instead of editing the last generated letter until nobody knows which facts were yours.
